The Department of Gender under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Divine Mother and Child Foundation (DMAC) have screened over 500 women at Abomosu for various diseases and feted them, to mark the Mother’s day celebration.

The programme, supported by Promasidor, producers of Indomie, Blue Skies, producers of natural fruit drinks and Vodafone Ghana, offered screening on blood pressure, hepatitis, sugar, malaria and ultrasound scan screening for pregnant women at Abomosu near Anyinam.

Ms Juliana Abbequaye, the Acting Eastern Regional Director, Department of Gender, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the objective of the intervention was to provide the opportunity for women to check their health status.

Ms Abbequaye said going forward, her outfit with support from all relevant stakeholders planned to organise empowerment programmes in the rural communities to help women and especially the teenagers to move away from early sex and focus on education.

The Executive Director of the DMAC, Mr Edmund Duodu Atweri, said more than 7,000 pregnant women had benefited from free ultrasound scan screening and 2000 other women and children in health screening exercises.

The Foundation, he added, had procured a mobile health screening van to be able to reach out to the rural communities to ensure women had access to health services as part of their women empowerment drive.
